Mallorca: Hike to the dream beach Platja des Coll Baix

Hike to the viewpoint Mirador de Penya des Migdia

The hike starts high above the sea at the Ermita de la Victòria (which belongs to Alcúdia). Our first destination is the viewpoint Mirador de Penya des Migdia (also called Penya Roja). We first follow the wide road. After a quarter of an hour, in a sharp bend to the right, there is a path to the left with a wooden railing - we take it.

The path quickly leads us higher and soon we have a fantastic view of the coast. We walk through a dense degree, which grows at the edge of the path. In places, there are a few exposed sections. After three-quarters of an hour, we reach a narrow passage built into the rock face. A narrow exposed stone staircase leads to the eye of the needle. Immediately afterwards, the path leads along the rock face for a few metres, quite exposed. A steel chain in the rock face provides some safety.

The Mirador de Penya des Migdia viewpoint

Shortly afterwards we reach the viewpoint Mirador de Penya des Migdia. An old bunker and a cistern are silent witnesses. We enjoy the truly impressive view and start climbing to the summit of Penya des Migdia, where an old cannon still bears witness to the strategic importance of this place. The path leads once again through rocky terrain quite steeply upwards. After a quarter of an hour we are at the summit. We look north to Cap Formentor and the bay of Pollença. We descend along the same path until we reach the wide track from which we branched off.

Ascent to the Talaia d'Alcúdia

Our hike now continues towards the 446 metre high Talaia d'Alcúdia and the beautifully situated dream beach Platja des Coll Baix. We first follow the wide road, which at the foot of the Talaia d'Alcúdia leads into a beautiful path that quickly takes us upwards. The last stretch to the Talaia d'Alcúdia leads over a wide ridge. It takes about an hour to reach the summit (without the detour to the Mirador de Penya des Migdia viewpoint) from the car park. On the summit there are old ruins and a small shelter for birdwatching. A few gnarled pines provide shade - and of course the view of Mallorca's east coast is breathtaking. A few pushy goats try to steal our snack, but we don't let that stop us. However, our beach mat did not survive this assault unscathed. So be careful, these goats eat everything!

Continuing through breathtaking scenery

After a short break, we follow the path towards Platja des Coll Baix. The stony path almost gives us a bit of an alpine feeling, but it is not exposed. We leave the Talaia d'Alcúdia far behind us. After half an hour, we reach a vantage point with a breathtaking view down to the Platja des Coll Baix. It no longer looks far - but that is deceptive. The path leads in countless long serpentines in 20 minutes first to the shady rest area Collet des Coll Baix. We follow the path through the forest for another 20 minutes to Platja des Coll Baix. By the way, there are no supposed shortcuts, so always stay on the seemingly never-ending path. To get to the beach, we now have to climb for another ten minutes over a fairly rocky path, almost a little.

We leave the Talaia d'Alcúdia behind us and walk in the direction of Platja des Coll Baix. Platja des Coll BaixFar below us lies the dream beach Platja des Coll Baix Wanderweg im AbstiegBut before we can jump into the cool water, we still have to hike for about 50 minutes.

The Platja des Coll Baix

The Platja des Coll Baix is a dream beach as it is written in the book. Turquoise water and a fine pebble beach quickly make you forget your efforts. However, shady spots are rare. We take off our musty hiking boots and plunge into the cool water - a real treat. Yes, after the long tour we let our souls dangle a little.

Platja des Coll Baix

Finally, the Platja des Coll Baix is getting closer. After the long hike, a dip in the sea is well deserved

How to get to the Platja des Coll Baix by car

By the way, you don't have to hike for hours to get to Platja des Coll Baix. We realise this when we see people in bathing shoes and with coolers on the beach. You can drive by car to the vicinity of the Collet des Coll Baix rest area. From the car park you can reach the beach in about three quarters of an hour (which is also a bit of a challenge with bathing slippers and a freezer).

The way back

For the way back we choose the same route. Alternatively, from the Collet des Coll Baix rest area, you could do a round trip through a valley back to the Ermita de la Victòria car park. This variant has considerably fewer metres in altitude, but is altogether quite a bit longer.
